Invitation from Office of the Solicitor General:
Dear Chief,
Since the last First Nations Leadership Knowledge Forum on November 5, 2020, the Ministry of the Solicitor General has been continuing the important work to bring the Community Safety and Policing Act, 2019 (CSPA) into force. The CSPA enhances oversight, improves governance, training, and transparency while, at the same time, treats police with fairness and respect, to develop better relationships between police and the communities they serve. Your insights, advice and knowledge will allow the Ministry to improve and enhance policing requirements as it relates to the experiences and needs of your community.
We invite you or a delegate to the next series of First Nations Leadership Knowledge Forums where we will discuss specific sections of the legislation related to First Nations policing and various regulations that may be of interest to your community.
The session dates for First Nations who receive self-administered policing are scheduled for August 19th and September 14th from 9:30am to 12:30 p.m. EST, with different matters/materials being covered on these two dates. It is recommended that you, or your delegate, attend both sessions to get a chance to hear about and discuss all the matters. Given the continued public health restrictions, meetings will continue to be held virtually through Zoom.
Additional sessions will also be held for First Nations who receive policing through the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) or municipal police services, and First Nations who are recipients of the First Nation Policing Program (FNPP) and receive policing services delivered by First Nation Constables through the Ontario First Nations Policing Agreement-OPP administered model or policing services delivered by dedicated OPP officers. These sessions will cover the same information and have been organized in this way to explain how policing requirements apply to the specific type of policing those communities receive.
You are welcome to attend these additional sessions in lieu of or
in addition to those noted above and the dates are as follows:
- First Nations with policing services delivered by First Nation Constables through the Ontario First Nations Policing Agreement-OPP administered model or policing services delivered by dedicated OPP officers: August 24th and September 16th
- First Nations policed by the OPP or municipal police service: August 26th and September 22nd
To confirm your participation or ask questions, please contact Tracey King, by email at tracey.king@ontario.ca or by phone at (705) 772-9028. Your feedback is valuable, and we look forward to our continued engagement with you to bring the new Community Safety and Policing Act, 2019 into force.
Sincerely,
Sylvia Jones
