(Toronto, August 7, 2019) On behalf of the Chiefs of Ontario, we offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of long-time, former Grassy Narrows Chief, Simon Fobister, who made his journey to the spirit world on August 5, 2019, in Thunder Bay, Ontario.

“Simon was a strong and outspoken leader and advocate for the community of Grassy Narrows,” said Ontario Regional Chief RoseAnne Archibald. “He played an instrumental role in leading negotiations regarding clear-cut logging and continuously advocated for environmental justice and proper health care for his community to address the mercury poisoning that has affected Grassy Narrows for decades. Alongside his late cousin, Steve Fobister Sr., Simon had dedicated much of his life to bringing change to Grassy Narrows and keeping the momentum going to bring these issues to the forefront. I was blessed to know him and work with him in my various leadership capacities throughout the years.”

“Simon was a powerful voice and was very committed to addressing the legacy of colonial practices and creating meaningful action to championing First Nations rights and protecting the traditional lands and waters surrounding Grassy Narrows,” said Regional Chief Archibald. “On behalf of the Chiefs in Ontario, our hearts go out to the community of Grassy Narrows and his beloved family and friends. He will be missed greatly, by many, I wish him well on his sacred journey to the spirit world.”
