Ontario Regional Chief Abram Benedict has released the following statement regarding the launch of commemorative stamp honouring Josephine Mandamin’s lifetime of water advocacy:
“Today, Canada Post unveiled a commemorative stamp honouring Water Walker Josephine Mandamin to mark National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21,” said Ontario Regional Chief Abram Benedict. “Josephine Mandamin, Odawa from Wikwemikong Unceded Territory on Manitoulin Island, was a fierce advocate for water and an inspiration to First Nations’ peoples and others in her work.”
“Grandmother Josephine inspired generations through her tireless efforts to draw attention to both the importance of protecting our waters and by highlighting the pervasive threats posed to them,” Ontario Regional Chief Benedict said. “It’s encouraging to see a federal institution like Canada Post honour her in this manner.”
Mandamin cofounded the Mother Earth Water Walkers, was an Anishinabek Women’s Water Commissioner and a driving force behind the Water Declaration of First Nations in Ontario. The Water Walks began in 2003 on Lake Superior. The initial walks drew attention to suffering of the Great Lakes and emphasized roles and responsibilities of First Nations women, and the need for protection, restoration, and ceremony.
She travelled over 25,000 kilometers around each of the Great Lakes until her passing in 2019.
“Josephine’s presence and message continues to ripple throughout the country and the world. Her perseverance continues to First Nations’ peoples and those who continue to walk for the water continue to draw from her strength and perseverance,” Ontario Regional Chief Benedict said.
Mandamin’s stamp can be purchased at Canadapost.ca and their offices beginning on June 21.
