Decolonizing Systems and Planting Seeds – Advice from Ontario’s First Nations Survivors and Families
A National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) was launched in 2016 and produced a final report in 2019 containing 231 Calls for Justice. The first Call for Justice was to develop a National Action Plan to address violence against Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people. The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) contributed to the National Action Plan by soliciting regional First Nations advisory groups across the country. These groups informed consultation sessions in the provinces/territories that fed into regional reports and AFN’s ever-green Action Plan Breathing Life into the Calls for Justice. In the Ontario region, AFN partnered with the First Nations Women’s Caucus. The Caucus took the lead for Ontario and decided to use a “Families First” approach to gathering advice by connecting with MMIWG survivors and family members who have lost loved ones.
