(Algonquin Unceded Territory, Ontario – April 6, 2023) Ontario Regional Chief Glen Hare issued the following statement in support of the Ontario First Nations police chiefs human rights complaint with the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal (CHRT) over the federal government’s chronic underfunding of police services:

“Last week, Ontario First Nations police chiefs filed a human-rights complaint with the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal (CHRT) over the federal government’s chronic underfunding of police services,” said Ontario Regional Chief Glen Hare. “This complaint was launched based on the fact that First Nations have been suffering discriminatory underfunding and under-resourcing of their police services, which police chiefs claim leads to higher crime and unsafe communities. The complaint was filed by nine Ontario First Nations police chiefs and has the support of the twenty-two (22) First Nations police chiefs in Quebec.”

“On behalf of the Chiefs of Ontario, we express our unwavering support for the Ontario First Nations police chiefs and forces that are filing this complaint and fighting for the rights of equitable services, adequate funding, and safer communities.

Ontario First Nations and the Chiefs of Ontario continue to fight and advocate for the recognition of First Nations police forces as an essential service and for equitable and adequate police funding through agreements that are co-developed and continually revisited so that funding never runs out.”
