(Toronto, ON – July 12, 2022) Ontario Regional Chief Glen Hare issued the following statement congratulating re-elected Premier Doug Ford on forming a majority government:

“I wish to congratulate Premier Doug Ford on his re-election and all new and returning members of his cabinet, sworn in on June 24, 2022. Over the past several years, the Ford government has worked diligently to enhance and strengthen Ontario’s relationship with First Nations,” said Ontario Regional Chief Glen Hare. “I am eager to continue our important work.”

In May 2022, the Chiefs of Ontario and First Nations Leadership developed Creating a New Legacy: Building a Strong Foundation for Future Generations, which outlines some of the socio-economic priorities for First Nations in Ontario. Creating a New Legacy was delivered to each leader of Ontario’s major provincial parties with a request for a commitment to work with First Nations leadership to implement these priority items.

“On the campaign trail, we heard many promises from the Progressive Conservatives to deliver on high-priority items for Ontarians, including affordability, housing, and health care—but offered very few promises specifically for First Nations.”

“Creating a new legacy for Ontario’s economy requires full participation, consent, and partnership with First Nations and Treaty rights-holders across the province. With this renewed start at Queen’s Park, I call on the Ford government to work in full partnership with First Nations Leadership to address our mutual socio-economic priorities, as outlined in the Creating a New Legacy: Building a Strong Foundation for Future Generations document.”

“I look forward to meeting with Premier Ford, Minister Rickford, and his Cabinet as soon as possible to continue our vital work advancing our shared priorities in critical areas such as justice, economic development, health and well-being, and prosperity.
