(Toronto, ON – July 6, 2021) Ontario Regional Chief Glen Hare issued the following statement congratulating Mary Simon of Kangiqsualujjuaq, Nunavik, on her appointment as the 30th Governor General of Canada and as the first Indigenous person to fill the role:
“I am pleased with the appointment of Mary Simon as Governor General of Canada. This sends a strong message to our youth, women and communities that their voices and stories are welcome in leadership positions across our country. Ms. Simon has also been an exceptional Inuit leader and long-time advocate for Indigenous rights and culture.
I look forward to working alongside Her Excellency, Mary Simon, to strengthen the current relationship with First Nations in Ontario and the Government of Canada. Through mutual respect and recognition of Indigenous rights and culture, we can ensure First Nations’ needs are met in critical areas to build healthy First Nations families and communities.”
