(Toronto ON – June 3, 2024) Ontario Regional Chief Glen Hare and the Ontario First Nations Young Peoples Council (OFNYPC) have issued the following statement regarding National Indigenous History Month and Pride Month:
“As June marks both National Indigenous History Month and Pride Month, this time serves as a profound opportunity to honour the rich histories, cultures, and contributions of First Nations communities, while also celebrating the diversity and resilience of the 2S-LGBTQIA+ community within our nations,” said Ontario Regional Chief Glen Hare. “Drawing on the wisdom of our Elders and the energy of our youth, we continue to build strong, healthy communities that respect each other, and all of creation.”
This month we emphasize unity, reflection, and pride, in our shared identities. Understanding our history is crucial in this journey, as it empowers us to preserve our heritage and inspire future generations.
“This month we celebrate the resilience of our First Nations people and diversity within our communities. It serves as a powerful reminder of our beautiful cultures and Indigenous people worldwide. May we lend support, kindness, and love to our 2S-LGBTQIA+ kin.” said OFNYPC Facilitator Hanna Sewell. “We are reminded of the power of community, culture and the importance of standing together. As First Nations youth leaders, we are determined to create an inclusive accessible future where all First Nations can thrive working together.”
“We encourage all Leadership, technicians, and community members to support events and learning opportunities held throughout the month of June to support both National Indigenous History Month and Pride Month.”
The Chiefs of Ontario Education Sector will be sharing information on the history of First Nations education and language revitalization to honour National Indigenous History Month, and the COO Women’s Initiatives Sector will continue to offer a free virtual 2Spirit learning series featuring guest speakers, with more dates to be announced in the near future.
