(June 15, 2023 – Thunder Bay, Ontario) Ontario Regional Chief Glen Hare, First Nations Leadership and the Chiefs of Ontario will gather in Ottawa, Ontario on Monday, June 19, 2023, to oppose the passing of federal legislation related to the recently updated Self-Government Recognition and Implementation Agreement between the Metis Nation of Ontario and Canada and discuss the legislation’s impact on First Nations Rights in Ontario.

During the 2022 Chiefs of Ontario Special Chiefs Assembly, on September 6-7, 2022, First Nations Leadership passed Resolution 22/31S, demanding the Government of Canada refrain from any actions which unlawfully recognize the MNO as jurisdictional, inherent, and section 35 rights holders, including the introduction of any legislation to implement the Self-Government Agreement or otherwise recognize the MNO as having section 35 rights.

On May 19, 2023, Ontario Regional Chief Glen Hare issued a statement of support for First Nations in Ontario who are opposing the proposed federal Métis self-government legislation and the recognition of “new” Métis historic communities on First Nations’ Ancestral and Treaty territories.
