(Toronto, Ont.–September 6, 2024) The Chiefs of Ontario expresses its deepest condolences to the friends, family and colleagues of Grand Chief Cathy Merrick, the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs’ first-ever female grand chief.

Grand Chief Merrick will be remembered for her fierce advocacy for her home, Pimicikamak Cree Nation, and for all First Nations in Manitoba.

She was pivotal in obtaining commitments from the Manitoba government to search the Prairie Green Landfill to repatriate the remains of Marcedes Myran and Morgan Harris, two of the women murdered by convicted serial killer Jeremy Skibicki.

Grand Chief Merrick’s time at the AMC was marked by a persistent drive to ensure that First Nations are represented and at the table when decisions concerning them are made.

The Chiefs of Ontario’s staff are thinking of Grand Chief Merrick, and her family, friends and colleagues in this tragic time.
