(June 11, 2021 – Oneida Nation of the Thames, ON) A/Ontario Regional Chief Joel Abram (AIAI Grand Chief) issued the following statement marking Indigenous History Month:

“This month, we commemorate the 12th anniversary of National Indigenous History Month, a day to celebrate the unique heritage, culture, art, and traditions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples across Canada,” said A/Ontario Regional Chief Joel Abram.

“While this month is devoted to celebrating Indigenous resiliency and diversity amongst our Nations, it is with a heavy heart that I remind all Canadians not to forget the atrocities and injustices suffered by Indigenous people, many of which are embedded in our shared history and continue to this day. We must act now if we are to move forward as equitable partners. We can no longer wait to implement the Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Calls for Justice from the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. Our families and communities deserve justice now.

June also marks Pride Month. Celebrated worldwide, Pride Month is a time to recognize the diverse experiences, perspectives, and contributions of all LGBTQ2S+ individuals and amplify our voices in celebration of culture, acceptance and abiding love.

Through June, I encourage all to participate in one of the many virtual Indigenous History Month and Pride Month activities that will take place across our Nations, including on National Indigenous Peoples Day, June 21. It is through this that we will be able to build a safer, more inclusive global society for all LGBTQ2S+ community members and create opportunities to learn more about the rich history of the Indigenous peoples who shaped our province and our country.”

The Chiefs of Ontario will be celebrating National Indigenous History Month and Pride Month by sharing virtual events, resources and other learning activities to promote human rights for all. Stay up to date through Facebook, Twitter and Instagram via @ChiefsofOntario.
