In July 2019, the Assembly of First Nations (AFN) declared a First Nations Climate Emergency, recognizing that “…climate change constitutes a state of emergency for our lands, waters, animals, and peoples.” Resolution 05/2019 laid out some immediate steps for AFN to plan a National Climate Gathering and develop a National Climate Strategy.

Why this survey?

In order to advance the AFN National Climate Strategy, and in light of the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic, the AFN has worked to incorporate different techniques including this survey to support the involvement of First Nations leadership, men, women, youth, knowledge keepers, and experts from the four directions. To our knowledge, there has not been a national survey on First Nations and climate completed in recent years, however there are multiple regional efforts, whether surveys or gatherings, that are taking place in British Columbia, Yukon Region, and the Atlantic Region.

These efforts are intended to compliment the AFN National Climate Strategy which will seek to identify key themes of action that must be adapted and led by First Nation rights-holders. Regional plans and surveys could provide the specific-priorities and expectation required for policymaking based on leadership from rights-holders. Indeed, the efforts of AFN as a national advocacy organization are intended to facilitate space and open doors for First Nations. This will demonstrate First Nations’ leadership and their role as active drivers of positive change.

Details

This survey will take between 15-30 minutes to complete. AFN recognizes the highest standards of research practice and will ensure the principles of OCAP (Ownership, Control, Access, and Possession)  will be respected. Responses will remain confidential, and we do not collect identifying information such as name, email address or IP address. Providing your name, email address and telephone number will be voluntary in the event that you wish to be considered for entry into the participants   prize draw. In order to be considered for the prize draw, we are prioritizing participants of First Nations ancestry. Please indicate the name and location of your Nation.

We will keep your information confidential. All data is stored in a password protected electronic format. To help protect your confidentiality, the survey will identify you by a number. This is done only to identify which region the data is being collected in.  Information will be kept for further distribution purposes, on a request basis only.

Thank you very much in advance for your participation in this project. Your insight is extremely important to us and much appreciated. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Graeme Reed, Senior Advisor in the Environment Sector, at greed@afn.ca.
