FIRST NATIONS CONSULTATION – BUILDING PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICES - An Input Gathering Session
Though it is well established that consultation with First Nations is a constitutional requirement by virtue of First Nations’ inherent rights, this was reaffirmed through the signing of the Political Accord between the government of Ontario and First Nation Leadership.
The requirement of meaningful reforms in government approaches to consultation with First Nations was reinforced and has now become more critical than ever. The government of Ontario is seeking to jointly develop a First Nations engagement plan to reform provincial consultation practices. These 2016 Consultation Sessions will provide an opportunity for First Nation consultation experts to come together and provide input on the development of recommendations to leadership on preferred consultation methodologies.
This event will explore options on improving communication and information flows, promoting stronger incorporation of First Nations’ perspectives and determine next steps. This session will result in the updating of the 2008 Consultation and Accommodation Toolkit for First Nations and determining a consultation framework for Ontario.

THUNDER BAY AGENDA
The Chiefs of Ontario is undertaking these preliminary sessions on consultation to hear from First Nations about their experiences with consultation and also to hear from the government of Ontario about their early steps on addressing consultation policy across government.
This is only the start of the discussion and we are planning on more dialogue in the months ahead. We will be working to improve the notice of the meeting dates and also look at holding sessions in other locations.
